Help Paros Animal Welfare Society

Writer: Anna McCrackenAnna McCracken

It's a Dog's Life founder, Anna, came back with more of a souvenir than she bargained for from her recent holiday to Paros, Greece.

That's right, there's a new pup in the pack. Welcoming, Hank!!!

Anna adopted Hank from PAWS (Paros Animal Welfare Society). Located on the outskirts of the village of Marathi, stray animals are brought when they are first rescued. The team behind this incredible charity work tirelessly to support the strays of Paros, and in the last 10 years more than 1,200 dogs and cats have been rehomed by them. However, PAWS are in desperate need of support. They're owed almost €36K from the Municipality of Paros and are currently taking legal action against them. You can sign their petition here, and make a donation through their website. Any support you can give makes a huge difference!

Without funding, PAWS will be unable to continue their work. The team rely on donations and volunteer action to house animals, treat illnesses, and vaccinate, neuter and microchip them (performed by licensed vets on the island).

PAWS also recognise the need for education to help change attitudes towards animals. To help do this, PAWS hold education sessions at the shelter for local children, where they meet the dogs and cats, and learn what it takes to give pets a fulfilling and happy life.

For anyone looking to adopt, we really can't praise the PAWS team more. An island off the coast of Greece, rehoming stray animals presents very real logistical challenges. Coordination between partner organisations, vets, ferries and pet taxi services is essential to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Even then, strong winds that spring up quickly can cause ferries to be cancelled.

Thanks to PAWS, Hank is now happily in his forever home in North London.

And for those visiting Paros, we'd highly recommend getting in touch with them – the support of volunteers to walk pups and play with kittens is always welcome!

And finally... A little more of handsome Hank.
